The Festival of Sail will be held Labor Day weekend, September 2 through September 5 in the San Diego Bay. This annual event is great for the whole family because there will be various activities that are sure to provide something for everyone! The event kicks off with a bang with a cannon fire salute as tall ships from all over the world sail into the bay for a weekend of fun. Ships will sail into the bay, passing by Harbor Island, Shelter Island, Seaport Village, and the Coronado Bridge. They will end at the Maritime Museum docks where all the action will take place!
There will be live music throughout the whole weekend, featuring genres such as contemporary rock, sea shanties, mariachi, steel drums, and more. Local community groups will also perform. There will be a petting zoo for children and lots of arts and crafts opportunities as well. Ships will be hosting cruises, cannon battles, and races in the bay, with over 150 arts and crafts vendors, food merchants, pirate shows, and more held on the nearby docks.
The highlight of this fun weekend in the San Diego Bay will no doubt be the Tall Ships Cannon Battles. Attendees will be transported back to a time when battles like this were common between ships in the area. In the late 1800s, when people were flocking to California during the Gold Rush, special battle tactics were used by revenue cutter ships when merchant ships failed to pay proper tariffs. The big ships were built for speed and had ample armor so they could successfully chase down these merchant ships. The mock battle will include fire from the deck guns, booms, and lots of smoke, to really bring the battles to life. The best part is you can be on board the ship during the battle to witness firsthand the real sailing experience!
There will be even more fun activities announced over the next month, so check the San Diego Festival of Sail website for more details and to buy tickets!
